Unequal treatment, noise, militarized external borders, disrespect, fake-news, colonialism, deportation, police violence, exclusion, sexualized assault, slavery, hate speech, exploitation or property damage, where does violence start for YOU? In a temporary discursive structure in the spaces of Lothringer 13 Halle, students of the Nicolai class will face this and other questions in the coming weeks:

How does the trajectory of a thrown stone pick up speed? What resentments and violent assaults do we legitimize through our (non-)actions? What ideologies of collective identity, do we embrace in order to maintain access to social resources? And last but not least: How can we self-reflexively revolt against violent structures in our everyday lives?

2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Israeli delegation for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. As a contribution to a culture of memory, students of the class of Olaf Nicolai take this as an opportunity to create, together with guests, an aesthetic and political confrontation with different forms of violence.

In a program of lectures, guests Daniel Loick, Theo Deutinger, Luise Schröder, Pedro Oliveira, Eva Leitolf and German Duarte will share their expertise and artistic approach in relation to questions posed by the students. The "reading sessions" will deal with the topic of violence in text, and the "Kino Club" is intended as a forum for exchange about film and violence. All interested parties are invited to participate.

On February 17, the exhibition "I Did Not See It Coming" opens. The participating artists try to challenge our violent normality in psychological and physical spaces and to wrest a small piece of emancipation from it. The field of tension ranges from video works with voyeuristic depictions of violence, to installations on the question of the authority of media reporting, the cinematic conflation of trauma and architecture, to the photographic analysis of the trajectory of a stone as a potential weapon.

In the course of the project, a publication (designed by Maximilian Schachtner) will be produced and presented at the finissage on March 6, 2022.

Conceived and curated by: Simona Andrioletti, Jakob Braito, Jonas Höschl, Martin Huber, Jonas Kolecki, Mariella Maier, Maria Margolina, Juliana Nozomi, Andrea Veselá, Mathias Zausinger.

The workshop will be dedicated to (im)-possibilities of artistic strategies dealing with the past and the present. Together with the students the artist wants to practically engage with their works within the exhibition, discuss and reflect their strategies.
