The book offers an in-depth theoretical exploration of the affective dimension of sound, specifically addressing environments in which sound contributes to an immersive atmosphere or ambience of fear and terror.

“Faszinierender Faschismus” - Essay by Susan Sontag about Leni Riefenstahl (hosted by Jonas Höschl)
In her essay "Fascinating Fascism" Susan Sontag vehemently tore apart the rehabilitation of Leni Riefenstahl, whom some well-meaning critics would virtually forgive with the argument that she had just done her job in a politically difficult time. Sontag, on the other hand, accuses the director of famous documentaries from the Nazi dictatorship of "promoting fascist aesthetics," and not only that: of also being co-responsible for persecution and death. Thus Sontag writes: "Fascist art glorifies surrender; it heightens thoughtlessness: it glorifies death."
